"I feel if I sit down and chill, I'm going to sink in a hole." Yonatan Shamriz's daughter turned two the day Hamas militants overran his community, killing 62 people. He later lost his brother, who was mistakenly killed by Israeli forces after escaping Hamas capture. Two years after his life changed forever, he tells the ABC how he feels like a "refugee in my own country".
Two years on from October 7, 2023, Yonatan is among many Israelis still coming to terms with how much Israeli society has shifted. Hamas militants killed about 1,200 people that day and took a further 250 hostage. More than 67,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza in Israel's subsequent campaign.
On the anniversary of the attacks, the ABC's Middle East correspondent Matthew Doran looks at how Israelis are processing their trauma and reacting to growing disquiet over the war in Gaza. Some believe it will lead to a "reckoning", while others believe Israeli forces should keep going.
Also in the Middle East: New details are emerging about allegations made by Australian activists detained after attempting to breach Israel's naval blockade of Gaza. Reports prepared by Australian diplomatic staff in Israel include allegations that
one Australian citizen was slapped and had his passport "destroyed", while some were forced to watch videos of Hamas's October 7 attacks.
