The Dunne Dispatch (School Boundaries, Part 10) - October 7, 2025

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I am writing to provide you with a brief update on school boundaries.

First, I need your help! The revised maps (scenarios) will be published here on Friday, October 10. When the maps are published, please look at the boundaries for your home, your neighborhood, and your community.

  1. Please contact my office (MountVernon@fcps.edu) if you identify any potential errors. I want to be proactive in identifying any errors that need to be corrected.
  2. Please also contact my office (MountVernon@fcps.edu) if you want to propose particular changes.
    • If your school is under capacity, you could organize your community to request a boundary change to increase enrollment.
    • If your school is near capacity and you want to avoid any modulars or trailers at your school, you could organize your community to propose a boundary change to reduce enrollment.
    • If your school is over capacity and you want to reduce or eliminate existing modulars and trailers at your school, you could organize your community to propose a boundary change to reduce enrollment.

The current boundaries have existed for 40 years. While the new policy calls for comprehensive boundary reviews every 5 years, you should assume the new boundaries will be in effect indefinitely.

Second, I was contacted by several constituents to request the community meeting for West Potomac HS and Mount Vernon HS be rescheduled so as to avoid a conflict with school events. I am pleased to report that the meeting has been rescheduled. Here are the dates for Mount Vernon District community meetings:

  • Wednesday, October 22, 6:30-8 PM, Hayfield SS Cafeteria
    • For Hayfield and South County Pyramids
  • Friday, October 24, 6:30-8 PM, Lewis HS Cafeteria
    • Lewis and Edison Pyramids
  • Saturday, October 25, 9:30-11 AM, Mount Vernon HS Cafeteria
    • Mount Vernon and West Potomac Pyramids

Meetings will be held in-person and online. When online registration opens, you can access it here. You can also view the full schedule of community meetings. You are welcome to attend any community meeting if you are unable to attend the meeting for your pyramid.

Third, there may be a sequel to the current boundary review in the spring, but it should not affect the Mount Vernon District. As you know, FCPS purchased a private high school to serve as the Western HS. (The formal naming process will commence in the near future.) The School Board will likely designate the new Western HS as a comprehensive high school. If that happens, FCPS will have to create a new high school pyramid, which will realign one or more middle schools and elementary schools in the western half of the county. This will affect families living in the environs of Dulles Airport, so I do not expect any of my constituents to be affected.

Please do not hesitate to contact my office (MountVernon@fcps.edu) if we can be of any assistance.

Very Respectfully,

Mateo Dunne

Mateo Dunne, Mount Vernon District Representative
