The latest example of entertainment's love affair with murders comes in the form of "Monster: The Ed Gein Story," which debuted as the second most-watched TV show of the week on Netflix. The show, created by Ian Brennan and Ryan Murphy, is the latest dramatized take on a real-life serial killer, one whose predilection to use his victim's body parts and skin inspired everything from "Psycho" to "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre's" Leatherface and Buffalo Bill from "The Silence of the Lambs." That Gein served as the inspiration for so many boogeymen of pop culture gave it an extra dimension, just adding fuel to the fire of the "Monster" franchise. As such, it's no surprise its views over the first three days came in at 12.2 million, outpacing the opening of "Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story," which released last year with 12.3 million, but had the benefit of an extra day of viewership. Serial killers are having a moment. The fictional serial killer, Dexter Morgan, saw a resurgence in popularity over the summer thanks to Showtime's "Dexter: Resurrection." Real-life documentaries like Netflix's "Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer" are also generating buzz. But with "Monster," Netflix has found a happy medium blending fictional dramatization with a real-life basis. And it's proven to be a huge success for the streaming giant.
