Wominjeka, ABC science reporter Jacinta Bowler in the science hot seat this week.
And this week I'm asking: Is journalism over?
Okay, that might be a bit dramatic. (And you can always count on this newsletter to deliver the best in science news 😉)
But my colleague, technology reporter James Purtill, has looked into just how much Google's AI Overview feature, which provides an AI-generated summary at the top of Google search, has affected online news traffic.
And the results are not looking good for news sites.
While this isn't really surprising, it is kind of weird — Google is the world's biggest advertising company, and almost all of the ads you see on websites will be "served" through them.
So it doesn't really make sense to keep people away from those websites and, by extension, those ads.
What is going on? And is Google's new "AI Mode" going to make us even less likely to click?
In other news, my partner in newsletter crime and environment reporter Peter de Kruijff has written about how Australian orchids have seemingly suffered rapid pollination decline since the 1970s.
The study itself is fascinating. A PhD student from the University of Western Australia has looked at thousands of orchid specimens under the microscope from as early as 1925 to see if they had been fertilised.
And of course, it's Nobel Prize week! Personally, my favourite Nobel Prize story this year is about immunologist Fred Ramsdell, who shared the win for the Medicine Prize, but was uncontactable (and therefore didn't know he'd won it) because he was walking through the mountains of Idaho.
You love to see that kind of work-life balance!
In audio land, Ann Jones on What the Duck!? sat down with Tom May — one of my favourite mycologists — to tell us once and for all why mushrooms kill.
And Belinda Smith has a good news story about eastern Australian humpback whales — they're back! Like seriously, higher-numbers-than-pre-whaling back. But why?
That's all for another week. If you have any feedback, a scientific photo or something else to share, send us an email.
