Author Alan Gratz Visit
Fourth, fifth and sixth graders enjoyed a presentation by author Alan Gratz on Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Gratz is an award winning historical fiction author and he had two new books come out this week, "War Games" and "Refugee: The Graphic Novel". He shared his writing process with students and the research he does for each book. He also shared that there are plans to turn each of his books into a graphic novel in the coming years. When asked how many books Mr. Gratz plans to write in the future, he answered, “I have 20 books right now, wouldn’t it be cool if I wrote 70?!”

Ava Service Dog
Union Mill Elementary is pleased to announce we will soon have a part-time Therapy Dog in the building. “Ava” is 3-year-old, black labrador retriever who has gone through rigorous training to work with children. Ava has been trained in a wide variety of skills and will be able to support students with emotional support and comfort. Once Ava settles into a routine at Union Mill she will be available to support students in crisis and those needing a break to help them through the school day. Later in the year she might also go into classrooms for a program called “Read to Ava”. One of our clinical team members will be with her at all times during the school day and she will not randomly approach students or go into any classrooms unannounced. More details to come. If you have any questions, please reach out to Lisa Fields, our UMES Social Worker lmfields@fcps.edu.

Mrs. Alongi's Art Class
All grades are having fun in Art, learning new drawing and coloring techniques according to their grade level themes and mediums used. They have been collaborating with each other, and how to create, refine, and reflect on their artwork.
Sixth graders collaborated with each other and created a logo that represented their unique identity, conveying their artistic expression through images instead of words. Fifth graders are having fun creating a contour shoe to show images connecting globalization. Third graders created a self-portrait of themselves, expressing their individual and family cultures through images. Fourth graders have been working on creating their own comics to show time in sequence. First graders have been working on learning how to draw family portraits, and Kindergarteners have been working on learning shapes and colors and how to combine shapes to make other images.
October 31st Family Cookout
