Our weather team is tracking the arrival of chilly air with some freeze warnings in effect tonight. And we're also keeping our eyes on a nor'easter this weekend. Other headlines include a serious crash in Peabody, and the Bruins winning their season opener under new coach Marco Sturm. I'm Kaitlin McKinley Becker, and these are our top stories this morning.

Mass. leaders condemn violence, reject notion of Trump deploying National Guard

A series of violent and viral moments is prompting a stern rebuke from leaders in Boston and Massachusetts.

“Do not engage in that behavior,” said Gov. Maura Healey.

“We do not tolerate violence in Boston,” said Mayor Michelle Wu.

Chilly air is finally here, freeze warnings in effect tonight

October has finally arrived. Chilly start, chilly finish. Typically, our high in Boston is around 64 degrees at this point in the month, but we’ll fall short of that today.

Look for a gusty wind through midday that will make the 50s feel like 40s. Long sleeves and light jackets are in order.

Same goes for tonight. The first hard freeze of the season is likely in many towns and cities – mostly away from the immediate coast/shore roads. This is the ideal setup for radiational cooling as winds go light/calm and the sky remains crystal clear.

Woman airlifted after hit-and-run crash in Peabody

Massachusetts State Police are searching for a driver who fled after a crash that seriously injured a motorcyclist Wednesday in Peabody.

Troopers responded to the crash on Route 1 shortly before 8 p.m. The victim, a 30-year-old woman who was on a motorcycle, was airlifted to a Boston hospital.

Authorities are searching for the vehicle involved, but did not give a description.

‘No more': Gov. Healey announces crackdown on illegal car meet-ups in Mass.

Gov. Maura Healey announced Wednesday that she has ordered Massachusetts State Police to crack down on illegal car meet-ups taking place across the state.

“No more. No more,” she said at a news conference shortly after noon at the State House. “You will be held accountable.”

“You’re going to be punished. I’m serious,” the governor added.

Bruins beat Capitals 3-1 in NHL season opener

David Pastrnak had a goal and two assists and Jeremy Swayman made 34 saves in the Boston Bruins’ 3-1 victory over Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night.

Pastrnak scored in the second period and Elias Lindholm added a goal at 7:41 of the third — just 38 seconds after Tom Wilson had tied it at 1 for Washington.

Morgan Geekie scored into an empty net with 57.1 seconds remaining.

Tree crashes down onto moving vehicle in Somerville, sending driver to hospital

A driver was taken to the hospital Wednesday after a tree fell on his vehicle in Somerville, Massachusetts.

Fire officials said the tree came down on Paulina Street, hitting the moving vehicle and takin down power lines. It happened around 3 p.m.

The man’s injuries are not considered life-threatening, the Somerville Fire Department said.
