What’s it worth to the Red Sox to try to make the most of what they’ve identified as a “window of contention”?
In 2025, according to major league sources, the Red Sox spent past the luxury-tax threshold ($241 million) after staying below it in 2023 and 2024. According to estimates from Spotrac, the Sox finished with a payroll of roughly $246.5 million, seventh-highest in baseball.
There were dramatic pivots to get there, including the signing of Alex Bregman to a heavily deferred, three-year, $120 million deal (calculated, for luxury-tax purposes, as roughly $31.9 million) and the trade of Rafael Devers to the Giants, which deleted about $16 million for luxury-tax purposes (albeit with a little less than $6 million brought back in salary for Jordan Hicks).
Will the Red Sox keep spending at or beyond those levels?
