“Pregnancy is stunningly under-studied,” Bill Gates recently said while discussing news that his foundation will commit more money than ever to women’s health. 

The $2.5 billion Gates Foundation investment, announced in August, will flow toward R&D for potential first-in-class preeclampsia therapies, HIV treatments, menstrual health tools and more. The goal, Gates stated, is to help fill the long-standing gap in women’s health research, which is growing wider as funding cuts trouble the NIH. 

Pharma has also long struggled to bring pregnant and lactating women into the clinical trials fold. Today, we’re looking at the FDA’s recent moves to tackle the issue and how it could impact pharma.
