WWES Friday Updates 10/17/25

October 17, 2025

Dear Waynewood Owls,

What a wonderful and energetic week we've shared here at Waynewood! The air has been crisp, the leaves are starting to turn, and our students have been full of excitement, especially with all the fantastic activities we've been enjoying.

Our Field Day on Thursday was a display of teamwork and fun! The smiles on our students’ faces were the best evidence that it was a day well spent. I want to send a huge and heartfelt thank you to our incredible P.E. teachers, Mr. TJ Taylor and Mrs. Nicole Greiner, for planning and executing such a meticulously organized and genuinely engaging day for every single grade. An extra round of applause goes to our phenomenal 6th grade students who demonstrated wonderful leadership, guiding their younger schoolmates through all the station activities. They are truly role models for the entire Waynewood community.

Speaking of celebrations, our school assembly this week was a reward for meeting our ambitious Jog-A-Thon fundraising goal! We hosted a thrilling Mad Science assembly that left students mesmerized by bubbling concoctions and exciting experiments. We hope you’ll be sure to ask your child tonight about the coolest experiment they witnessed—you might be surprised by their answer! Thank you again for all your hard work and generosity in making the Jog-A-Thon such a success.

As we look ahead, please mark your calendars for two very important dates. First, a friendly reminder that there will be no school on Monday, October 20th, as we observe Diwali. We wish all our families celebrating the Festival of Lights a joyful and peaceful holiday.

Second, the highly anticipated Fall Fun Night is next week! This is consistently one of the most popular PTA events of the year, and you absolutely don’t want to miss it. Please join us next Thursday, October 23rd, for a truly spooktacular evening featuring trunk-or-treat, fun games, a costume contest, and a lively DJ. Remember that the presale for wristbands and pizza ends at midnight tonight.  You will still be able to purchase wristbands at the door next Thursday evening.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Katie Cachine, Principal

Alyssa Bonner, Assistant Principal

Allison Ovalle, Assistant Principal

Spotlight: Mad Science Assembly

Mad Science

Today we had a Mad Science Assembly to celebrate reaching our Jog-A-Thon goal. We made hypotheses, learned all about what scientists do, and even mixed a few solutions. We learned that our hands can be conductors of electricity and we even made something explode!  Thank you to the PTA for sponsoring this assembly, it was great fun!

Library Updates

Thank you for a great book fair! Students have been doing a great job of returning library books this year. Books are borrowed for 3 weeks but can be renewed for more time. Once a month, overdue notices will be sent to the email address listed when your child enrolled at WWES. The first overdue notices were sent out last week. Reminders for long overdue books will be sent via Talking Points. Our librarian, Ms. Krause, can be reached at vkrause@fcps.edu. Thank you – have a nice weekend!

Elementary Language Arts Grades

You might notice that your student's progress report grades in English language arts (ELA) look a little different. This is happening because we've brought in a new curriculum and new ways to check on learning (assessments), and there are new state guidelines called the VDOE Standards of Learning.

FCPS is raising the bar and setting high goals! We are teaching and grading students on the big skills they need by the very end of the school year. Think of it like going on a journey. It’s challenging at first, but on your journey, you learn your way — and maybe even a few shortcuts!

First quarter grades may seem lower than usual as students work hard to reach grade-level mastery.

Please know that this is a positive, expected part of the learning journey. We are here to support every student as they grow and achieve. We are celebrating the effort and growth toward these new, higher standards!

When Should Your Child Stay Home?

Whether students miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss.

Help your student succeed by encouraging them to miss as few days as possible. However, do make sure your student stays home if they are sick. So when should your child stay home? Visit the FCPS website for helpful ideas regarding absences and how to work with your child and our school.

If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to notify our school and your child’s teacher so that assistance can be provided if needed. Keep an open line of communication with our public health nurse. Call the school or email the attendance line
(waynewoodelem.attendance@fcps.edu) as soon as you know your child will be absent and tell school staff why and for how long.
