Heads Up! Change Coming to How We Report IEP Progress

We have a quick but important announcement for families of students with an Individualized Education Program (IEP).

Starting at the end of the first quarter, October 31, 2025, Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) will begin using letter codes instead of number codes on your child's IEP progress reports.

Why the Switch?

This change helps FCPS align with the Virginia Department of Education's (VDOE) statewide system. This means that the format for reporting progress will now be the same across the entire state.

Please note: This is only a change in how progress is reported. It does not affect your child's services, supports, or instruction in any way—those all remain the same!

What Do the New Letters Mean?

You'll now see letters instead of numbers on the reports. Here is what the new codes stand for:

M (Mastered): The student has met the IEP goal.

SP (Sufficient Progress): The student is making enough progress to be expected to meet the goal by the end of the IEP year.

ES (Emerging Skill): The student is beginning to show the skill but does so inconsistently.

IP (Insufficient Progress): The student is not making enough progress to meet the goal without changes to instruction or supports

NI (Not Introduced): The goal has not been introduced yet during this reporting periods

For a short time, you may see both the old number and the new letter codes on reports until a new annual IEP is written.

If you have any questions or need more details, please reach out to your child's case manager! Thank you for partnering with us!
