| | | | | Good morning, Chicago. We have a birthday to celebrate. The Gateway Arch turns 60 today. It’s quite the experience to travel up the Arch and look out at St. Louis from the observation platform. (I could do without the claustrophobic elevator capsule and its diagonal movement, though.) In honor of the occasion, Chicago lawyer and history buff Michael Peregrine tells the story of how the architectural marvel came to rise above this city on the Mississippi. Speaking of small spaces, the Tribune Editorial Board wishes Ald. Daniel La Spata good luck in rolling out Chicago’s first free, “self-cleaning” public restroom. The board hopes for the best, but based on San Francisco’s experience, it fears the potential for problems. In its other editorial, the board has a stern message for Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem as federal agents repeatedly tear-gas Chicagoans on neighborhood streets: Stop the escalation. “There has to be a moratorium on these kinds of un-American tactics and there has to be one now,” the board writes. With the General Assembly convening for the last week of its veto session, Regional Transportation Authority Chairman Kirk Dillard makes the case for the proper funding of Northeast Illinois’ public transportation system, and three letter writers including a state lawmaker from Chicago discuss the federal 340B drug discount program that is the subject of debate-stirring legislation. Finally, in his latest column, foreign affairs writer Daniel DePetris notes that even though President Donald Trump may wish to reconnect with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during his Asia trip, Kim may not see any advantage to doing so. We’ll see you tomorrow. — Colleen Kujawa, opinion editor Submit an op-ed | Submit a letter to the editor | Meet the Tribune Editorial Board | Subscribe to this newsletter | | | | The Arch in St. Louis, completed 60 years ago, is a history lesson in stainless steel. | | | | | Will Chicago’s new public restroom be worth the flush? | | | | | ICE and Border Patrol agents wreaking havoc in Chicago neighborhoods can’t go on. | | | | | Illinois ranks last among peer states in state support for public transit, covering just 17% of costs while most states fund 40% to 50%. | | | | | The geopolitical situation has changed for North Korea in the years since Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un last met, mostly for the better. | | | | | Your local 340B hospitals and federally qualified health centers aren’t the villains in this story.
