Question: I've noticed white long rectangles in the road that standout from the dark asphalt. What are they?
Answer: They're bus pads!
We got a great question at Pike Fest last week, from a resident who had observed the long, lighter colored concrete slabs surrounded by asphalt in the roadway.
These concrete slabs are more durable than asphalt under the weight of buses that stop and roll through all day on Columbia Pike. (Did you know ART 41 and 45 run an average of 150 trips a day on Columbia Pike? Imagine all the times a bus stops for all the routes!)
In preparation for the Columbia Pike Transit Stations project, the current Columbia Pike Multimodal project includes building concrete bus pads at bus stops, along with sidewalk improvements and tactile strips for people with limited visibility.

Over the last five years of Vision Zero programming, we've learned a lot about how to prevent significant crashes, and the County has implemented projects to help make streets safer for all users.
But we also know that speeding, driving under the influence, and other factors continue to contribute to serious collisions involving people walking and biking.

Final paving and striping on Segment D are done! Crews are continuing to reconstruct the sidewalks and installing signal poles along the sides of the road, and road and sidewalk work on Segment C (east of South Courthouse Road) is on going.
Landscaping will happen between this fall and next spring. Crews may block off portions of the travel lane to access planting area along the medians and curbs.
Check out the Segment D page for details.
It's officially fall, and sunset is creeping earlier and earlier! How are you staying visible in the crepuscular hours?
