A public library in western Massachusetts plans to host a “Pride Club for Kids“ centering on sexual orientation and gender identity open to children of all ages. The South Hadley Public Library has drawn criticism online over the after-school activity The library describes the program as a social and educational space for young people interested in LGBT topics. "Drop in to our new Pride club, for all queer kids and allies," the club's description says on the library's web site. "We'll get to know each other, read and discuss together, and do crafts and activities. All ages welcome." The club plans to meet twice per month on Tuesdays, including November 4 and 18, and December 2 and 16, according to an event flyer. The right-wing X (Twitter) account Libs of TikTok slammed the club, saying it's inappropriate for kids. "Absolutely disgusting," it posted. "The South Hadley Public Library in Massachusetts is holding an all ages lgbtq pride club for 'queer kids' to chat about being lgbtq and read lgbtq propaganda books. They receive taxpayer funds. Why are our tax dollars funding the grooming of kids?" Meanwhile, Kevin Steele, a former 12News television anchor in Texas, expressed a similar sentiment. "Public funding for a Pride Kids Club in the Boston area??? Some say taxpayer dollars should not be used like this," he posted on Facebook. "This is at the South Hadley (MA) Public Library for goodness sake." Other social media users weren't happy, either. The Substack blog Distraction News expressed frustration on X (Twitte). "A club for children brainwashed by their parents (usually their own mothers who wanted daughters rather than sons) and other perverts including celebrities and political hacks," it posted, reacting to the club. Additionally, an account called LawyerforLaws said adults shouldn't push sexualities and identities onto children. "Something is horribly wrong: I never recall a time when sexual preferences, sexual ideas have been discussed, advocated and pushed so openly by adults towards children at public venues," it posted on X (Twitter). Also, an X (Twitter) account called rowdyamerican added, "Tax dollars should fund education, not indoctrination. Libraries pushing agendas is not where our focus should be." It's not the first time the South Hadley Public Library has hosted an LGBT-related event for children. Notably, it hosted one called the "ABC’s of LGBTQ+" in May 2022. Here is a description of the event from MassEquality: We are presenting the ABC’s of LGBTQ+ at South Hadley Public Library. This program provides an introduction to key terms and concepts related to sexual orientation and gender identity. Learn about diversity, equity, and inclusion as they relate to the LGBTQ+ community in an interactive and easy to follow 90-minute training. The program encourages participants to think about their own identities and experiences as well as the experiences of people with LGBTQ+ identities. Participants will walk away with practical knowledge, including tips for parents on having age-appropriate conversations with their children about LGBTQ+ identities. The ABC’s of LGBTQ+ is open to everyone. There is no expectation of background knowledge.
South Hadley is a town of about 17,000 in Hampden County, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. It's about 13 miles north of Springfield, Massachusetts. A spokesman for the South Hadley Public Library could not be reached for comment this past weekend.
