Rep. James McGovern, D-Mass., introduced the Healthy Meals Help Kids Learn Act, which seeks to permanently increase federal reimbursement for school meals by $.45 for lunch and $.28 for breakfast. The bill aims to address funding challenges, improve nutrition and support local food sourcing. SNA President Stephanie Dillard said higher reimbursements are necessary so schools can address staff needs such as training, upgrade their kitchen equipment, and add more local produce.

Schools are encouraging families affected by the shutdown to resubmit applications for free or reduced-price meals for their children. Schools that already qualify for free meals for all students are listed.
