Video killed the radio star, but MTV killed itself
Why it matters: I selected the image you see above because it captures what could have been.

MTV, once a revolutionary force in music television with its launch in 1981, is shutting down its UK music channels, marking the end of an era. Initially a trendsetter with music videos and cultural influence, MTV's decline is attributed to its inability to adapt to digital innovations like streaming platforms. The shift from music to reality TV and the rise of on-demand services like Spotify and YouTube have further eroded its viewership.

Can you imagine how strong MTV would still be if it had developed its own mobile music and video platform or acquired a company like Spotify a decade or so ago?

Napoleon had a rough couple of weeks
Why it matters: As you've probably heard, thieves hit the Louvre 10 days ago and made off with jewels from the collection of Napoleon's wife, Empress Marie Louise. On the military front, new information has also surfaced that sheds light on one of Napoleon's worst debacles.

DNA analysis of French soldiers from Napoleon's 1812 Russian campaign has uncovered that paratyphoid fever and relapsing fever played crucial roles in their deaths. Previously, typhus was thought to be the main cause. The study used genetic evidence from a Lithuanian mass grave to shed light on the dire conditions and multiple infections that plagued the retreating army.

Sabina Clare released another song
Why it matters: As I teased last week, my daughter Sabina has released a new song. This one is called "Ain't Kansas Anymore" and it plucks on guitar strings and heart strings.

Fun photo: The photo that you will see accompanying this song is one I took of Sabina in the hospital on the day her brother Charlie was born. Yep, she wore her Dorothy outfit - including ruby slippers - to meet her lil' bro for the first time.

Hey, Jack Kerouac ... you wrote another story?
Why it matters: A previously unpublished short story by Jack Kerouac, titled 'The Holy, Beat, and Crazy Next Thing,' was discovered among the possessions of the late crime boss Paul Castellano. The story, which shares characters with Kerouac's famous novel 'On the Road,' was found in Castellano's archive and has been acquired by Your Own Museum for $8,500. The origins of how Castellano obtained the story remain a mystery, adding an intriguing twist to the literary find.

The Long Bar turned back the clock
Why it matters: Shout out to my colleague Abiy Bekele, who dragged me to the Long Bar while we were in Singapore for a work trip back in 2018. Stepping into this place is like stepping back in time. Even if you don't like gin, you gotta order a Singapore Sling. Be sure to stroll around the Raffles Hotel to check out its history ... and then duck back into Long Bar to cool off with another beverage!

It's kinda funny how today's top story is about the death of MTV because my daughter's music journey epitomizes the network's demise. Sabina is giddy to be on Spotify, YouTube and Apple, but MTV is nowhere on her radar.

If you like WYWW, hate WYWW or want to submit a story, shoot me an email. Yes, I actually read them. The kindest compliment you can pay to WYWW is to send this link to your friends, family and colleagues so they can subscribe. Thanks!
