Tech Manager — The Ambiguity of New Tech
|
|
Mark Kiker explains how new technology inherently brings ambiguity, with its potential impact and adoption initially unclear, yet tech professionals thrive in this environment of uncertainty. They are tasked with exploring, understanding, and strategically implementing these new tools, often with limited information and diverse user opinions. Rather than being daunted, they embrace the unknown, proactively seeking clarity and driving progress by defining how the technology will be used and managing the transition from old systems. This ability to navigate ambiguity and extract value from the undefined is crucial for organizational advancement, whether through the adoption of new tools or by finding innovative uses for existing ones.

Blast Off with BricsCAD .BRX — Grant Dott outlines the process for companies to migrate their existing customizations from AutoCAD to BricsCAD. He explains how to port applications created with popular AutoCAD APIs like ObjectARX, .NET, ActiveX, and Visual LISP. For ARX and .NET, he advises developers to port their code to the BricsCAD Runtime Extension (BRX), noting that much of the original code may be compatible but that namespaces and some API calls will need to be updated. When using ActiveX, developers should account for differences in object models. For LISP files, the article notes that most code will run without changes, but automatic launch files must be renamed, and encrypted VLX and FAS files are not supported. Grant stresses the importance of early planning and, if source code is unavailable, suggests contacting vendors for BricsCAD-compatible software.

Small Changes, Big Impact: Hidden Dynamo Enhancements in Civil 3D 2026.1 — Lukas Drbohlav highlights two small but powerful updates to Dynamo for Civil 3D 2026.1 that streamline workflows. First, the CogoPoint.SetLabelStyle node now allows a <default> setting, enabling points to automatically inherit their style from point groups, which simplifies the management of large datasets like placing hundreds of trees with different styles. Second, a significant performance improvement to FeatureLine nodes makes it faster and more practical to automate tasks involving large-scale elevation adjustments. He argues that these seemingly minor fixes, often overlooked in software updates, are actually transformative for daily tasks, making automation more accessible and efficient for Civil 3D professionals.

Customizing Schedule Tables in ACA — Melinda Heavrin explains that schedule tables in AutoCAD Architecture are customizable tables that list data about objects within a building model. They rely on property sets and property set definitions to organize and extract data from objects, which is then displayed using schedule tags. Users can create and customize schedule table styles to control the appearance and content of these tables. Once a style is defined. a schedule table can be inserted into a drawing and can be set to update automatically. The software also allows for advanced functions, such as creating schedules from external drawings and exporting the data to file types like Excel spreadsheets.
