“Hello, little friend,” I said to the small lump inside my beach towel, which lay crumpled on the floor in front of me. I extended my hand, nearly shaking with excitement.
The lump hissed.
I snatched my hand back, startled but undeterred. Potato, my newly adopted hedgehog, was grumpy. Far from the mild-mannered, playful and cuddly hedgehogs I had spent the past months fawning over online, Potato was a bristly, standoffish curmudgeon of a mammal who loved two things: curling up inside fuzzy socks and being left alone.
