New AI tools promise to improve student success, particularly for first-generation and low-income students:

  • Predictive analytics can identify who needs support before they start struggling.
  • Academic tracking can enable proactive student advising.
  • AI-powered chatbots can provide instant information about admissions, registration, and mental-health services.
But machine learning isn’t perfect. These new approaches also introduce new risks, including the generation of inaccurate answers, the perpetuation of societal biases, and an increase in student dependence on AI.

Watch The Chronicle’s explainer for an overview of the opportunities and challenges for AI as a student success resource.
