| Hello. The US is suspending immigration requests from Afghanistan after the suspect in the shooting of two National Guards in Washington, DC was identified as an Afghan man. My colleague James Chater has the details. In Georgia, Caucasus correspondent Rayhan Demytrie reports on how pro-Europe protests have evolved in the past year. And to mark Thanksgiving in the US, we look at how mac and cheese became a traditional dish. | |

TOP OF THE AGENDA | Afghan man identified as shooting suspect |

| | US President Donald Trump said the attack was an "act of terror" and that the suspect would "pay a very steep price". Credit: EPA | The US Citizenship and Immigration Services is suspending immigration requests from Afghans in the aftermath of a shooting that left two National Guard members critically injured. Initially, West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey said in a post on X that both victims had died from their injuries, before sharing a second statement that cited "conflicting reports" about their condition. The Department of Homeland Security named the suspect, who was being treated after being shot, as Rahmanullah Lakanwal. The 29-year-old is said to have arrived in the US from Afghanistan in September 2021. An official has told the BBC's US news partner CBS that he applied for asylum in 2024, and his application was granted this year. |

| BEYOND THE HEADLINES | Georgian protesters vow to fight on |
|
| | | Hundreds of protesters have been fined and dozens jailed. Credit: Nurphoto via Getty Images | Ten of thousands of Georgians joined protests after Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced a four-year halt on moves towards joining the EU on 28 November 2024. All opposition parties have since boycotted parliament, meaning that increasingly repressive legislation has been passed unopposed, writes Rayhan Demytrie. A year on, several hundred protesters still gather every night despite the risks. |
