The Morning Wire team is off today in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States, instead tune in for a special newsletter from Laura McNeill, deputy director of AP's donations team. Be sure you are signed up for AP News Alerts so you don't miss any major breaking news.

Dear Morning Wire reader,

Since it's Thanksgiving, I’m here to share how grateful we are for readers like you.

Thank you for being there with us every morning as AP reporters document history around the globe.

Recently I asked my newsroom colleagues to share some of the work they are most proud of from the past year. Here's just a sample:

Finding wonder in the everyday: When a Michigan mechanic found a wallet wedged inside a car engine, we connected the dots: it had been lost 11 years earlier by a Ford factory worker in Minnesota. Two video journalists in two states came together in less than 48 hours to tell this delightful story of an unexpected reunion.

Giving voice to the vulnerable: After the U.S. dissolved its Myanmar foreign aid program, AP reporter Kristen Gelineau used contacts built over years to gain rare access to prison-like camps. By passing her questions to sources who recorded interviews and passed them back to her, she revealed children dying of malnutrition despite the fact that U.S. secretary of state testified before Congress that "no children are dying on my watch."

Innovation that connects: Our Chicago photojournalist documented the White Sox-Cubs crosstown series using vintage Polaroid cameras. The resulting photo essay captured baseball's nostalgic spirit and delighted fans everywhere. People at the stadium would stop and say, "Is that a Polaroid? I haven't seen one of those in forever."

Holding power to account: AP National Writer Eddie Pells spent years investigating SafeSport, the organization meant to protect Olympic athletes from sexual abuse. His relentless reporting revealed inadequate staffing, questionable guidelines and incomplete investigations — leading to executive firings and federal investigations.

Double-checking the facts: When political leaders made questionable claims — whether about ending wars, wind energy, or climate change — our News Verification Team drew from bureaus around the globe to double check claims and provide accurate information. From Trump to Taylor Swift, we're here to give you the facts.

If you’re grateful for the factual reporting AP journalists bring you every day in this newsletter, consider supporting AP with a year-end donation.

From all of us at AP — the reporters, photographers, editors and everyone who works to bring you the news every day — thank you. Thank you for trusting us. And thank you for believing that a free, independent press matters.

With deep appreciation,

Laura McNeill
