From editorial project manager Mia Staub: Whether you are good at or hate networking, I don’t know anyone who likes it. It is uncomfortable to pitch yourself to a stranger. But instead of approaching networking as impersonal transactions, Jacob Zerkle, in his article today, recommends treating these somewhat awkward interactions as intentional conversations. |
|
That is sort of how I got my job. When I told a professor of mine about my job search, he said his neighbor worked for Christianity Today. He invited me to a book launch where I met my future manager. In conversation, we found we had the same area code and were from the same town in Washington. We even realized she babysat my cousins as a teenager and attended church with my great-grandparents. |
|
Our small-world connections were not the reason I got my job, but it did start a conversation with someone at CT. Networking can simply be connecting with someone new. |

Have you worried about AI replacing human jobs, connection, and creativity? It’s true that AI has many uses, but in the right hands, this technology can become a force for good — serving people instead of replacing them. |

As we enter the holiday season, we consider how the places to which we belong shape us—and how we can be the face of welcome in a broken world. In this issue, you’ll read about how a monastery on Patmos offers quiet in a world of noise and, from Ann Voskamp, how God’s will is a place to find home. Read about modern missions terminology in our roundtable feature and about an astrophysicist’s thoughts on the Incarnation. Be sure to linger over Andy Olsen’s reported feature "An American Deportation" as we consider Christian responses to immigration policies. May we practice hospitality wherever we find ourselves. |
