Dear Colleagues, Students, and Friends,
I’m excited and deeply honored to share some meaningful news with you.
My latest article, “To Help Patients Sleep, Ask the Right Questions,” has just been published in Holistic Primary
Care, one of the most respected trade medical journals in integrative and functional medicine.
For more than 20 years, Holistic Primary Care (HPC) has been a trusted resource for thousands of progressive clinicians across the United States—including MDs, DOs, DCs, NDs, nurse practitioners, and forward-thinking primary care physicians who are committed to true root-cause medicine.
The journal is widely read at national integrative conferences and valued for spotlighting evidence-informed clinical insights that advance patient care.
Being published in HPC is not just a personal milestone.
It represents something much larger:
the growing recognition of functional medicine as an essential, credible, and transformative approach to modern
healthcare.
My article explores a question that has guided much of my clinical work for nearly four decades:
Instead of asking “How do we make you sleep?”
What if we asked, “Why is your body resisting sleep?”
This shift in perspective is at the core of Functional
Medicine 2.0™ — the next evolution of diagnostic clarity and clinical precision I’ve been developing, influenced heavily by research and teaching from Mayo Clinic, Harvard Medical School, Johns Hopkins, Stanford, Duke, and other world-class institutions.
In the article, I explore:
- Why conventional sleep treatments so often fall short
- Why melatonin, sleep hygiene, and
prescriptions fail to address deeper physiology
- How to uncover the true causes of insomnia (blood sugar, cortisol rhythms, inflammation, toxins, EMFs, gut health, neurotransmitters, and more)
- The “iceberg model” of sleep disruption
- The questions clinicians should be asking to decode the real drivers of insomnia
- A detailed framework for evaluating sleep using a functional medicine lens
For
clinicians, this framework offers a powerful, practical guide to helping patients finally achieve restorative sleep.
For patients and lay readers, it opens a window into why insomnia feels so intractable — and why real solutions exist when we understand the root causes.
This publication aligns perfectly with the work I’ve been doing to advance Functional Medicine
2.0™ — a model grounded in deeper investigation, clinical precision, and evidence-informed pattern recognition.
It also serves as an important foundation for my upcoming book,
Functional Medicine 2.0™ — The Evolution of Chronic Disease Care for the Modern Era,
to be released early next year.
