An analysis of the asylum system

A Syrian family sat on a bench with their backs to the camera, in a unknown town centre in England

In our new report we have mapped out the asylum system - from intake to outcome - to show the causes of delay and inefficiency.

We found for an effective, fair and value for money system, there are four critical requirements needed:

  • a whole-system approach

  • addressing fundamental barriers

  • timely & robust shared data

  • a resilient approach to capacity and workforce

Alongside this report there is an interactive data visualisation to show how people claiming asylum in the UK move through the system, the flow and quality of data, the costs, and how different organisations interact.

It also tracks the progress of a sample of 5,000 people who made an initial asylum claim in January 2023 - finding over half (56%)still do not have a final outcome.
