Before we wrap this little tour series up, I want to tell you about one night that changed how I look at "being good" on guitar.
…Show #23.
Packed room. Lights up. First song.
And 30 seconds in, my in-ear monitors die.
If you’ve never used in-ears, here’s what that means in plain English:
No guitar.
No band.
No click.
No pitch.
Just noise and panic.
And the song’s still rolling.
For half a second my brain did exactly what yours does when you freeze up at home…
"You’re about to screw this up in front of everyone."
But here’s what surprised me…
My hands didn’t buy it.
They kept moving. I locked my eyes on the drummer’s right hand, trusted the fretboard map in my head, simplified what I played, and rode the song out.
Not perfectly. But solid enough that nobody in the crowd knew anything was wrong.
Later that night I realized I didn’t survive that moment because I’m "special" or "more talented." (I’m none of those things lol) I survived it because of a handful of simple little hacks I’d been leaning on for years:
– what to focus on when everything goes sideways
– how to keep my hands relaxed when my brain is yelling
– how to simplify a part on the fly
– how to recover without falling apart
Tiny things.
But together, they’re the difference between "I crashed and burned" and "I got through it."
Here’s why that matters for you:
If you’ve lived through real life beyond a few decades… you already know how to handle hard things.
Guitar is not the exception.
You’re not miles away from mastery. You’re a few practical tools away from finally feeling like the player you’ve always wanted to be.
There are so many tools available, which is a blessing and a curse… but you just gotta choose one that you believe will get you the results they’re promising. My advice, find someone you trust, us or anyone, then commit.
And by the way, if you’re considering us, then I’d like to give you 36 of the exact little tricks I use to stay calm, sound good, and keep moving even when things go wrong.
Either way, I’m rooting for you!
Talk soon,
Eddie
