Kicking off

Week 16 saw the Patriots clinch a playoff spot.

That used to be a given when Tom Brady made his home in New England. Since his departure, not so much.

After back-to-back four-win seasons, and a four-year drought, the Patriots punched their ticket to the postseason in fine fashion.

They overcame an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit, with Drake Maye authoring two masterful scoring drives in the final quarter to secure the victory.

It was Maye's crowning moment, and signature win.

It was also an important stepping stone for the second-year quarterback. It marked his first comeback win, solidifying his teammates belief in him.

While they had faith he could deliver in that scenario, making it happen in such spectacular fashion on the road strengthened their belief.

In the playoffs, down two scores in the fourth quarter, the Patriots will be buoyed by the knowledge their quarterback can lead them back.

“Having him on our side, we know we have a chance,” tight end Hunter Henry said. “He’s a high-level player. A big-time player. We have the utmost confidence in him.”

That kind of belief in a quarterback is a powerful tool for any team. We saw it during Brady's unprecedented run. Now it's Maye's turn to see where that can take the the Patriots.

MassLive's Deputy Editor of Content Jim Pignatiello returns for Week 17 to make the pick:

The Drake Maye MVP hype train is back on the tracks and headed to New York New Jersey on Sunday afternoon as the Patriots take on the Jets.

According to DraftKings, Maye is currently second in MVP odds (+175) behind only Los

Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford (-215).

Meanwhile, the Patriots enter Week 17 having clinched a playoff spot for the first time since 2021. They can wrap up the AFC East with both a win over the Jets and a Buffalo Bills loss to the Philadephia Eagles.

While the Patriots’ stock is way up this year, the Jets (3-12) are Jetsing yet again and would have the No. 4 pick in the NFL Draft if the season had ended after Week 16. They are currently behind (or is it ahead of?) the New York Giants (2-13), Las Vegas Raiders (2-13) and Cleveland Browns (3-12). The Tennessee Titans and Arizona Cardinals are both also 3-12.

The Patriots are pretty banged up coming out of Sunday night’s win over the Ravens, so this should be a matter of survive and advance.

Final score prediction: Patriots 31, Jets 17

Patriots Question of the Week

Here is this week's highlighted question:

Do you think we'll see Kyle Williams being more involved in the offense? - Joe from Franklin

Guregian: If teams are going to continue playing more man-coverage, I do. Williams certainly has the speed to beat defenders, and as we saw against the Ravens, he has the ability to make big plays.

He's still not sharp on his route-running, but with wideouts Kayshon Boutte (concussion) and DeMario Douglas (hamstring) injured, he'll be seeing more time at least in the next few games. Ditto Efton Chism.
