Kicking off

The regular season is done. The Patriots are on to the playoffs.

Their transformation has come quicker than many anticipated.

They went from a four-win team in 2024, to a 14-win team in 2025. They went from cellar dwellers to division champs.

Sunday night, they're hosting the LA Chargers in a Wildcard Weekend matchup.

"Now, it really starts," Mike Vrabel told the team. "The tournament has begun."

Before pushing ahead, it's important to quickly pause and appreciate the Patriots becoming relevant again, and an enjoyable team to watch.

The post-Tom Brady years were trying to say the least.

But with Vrabel at the helm surrounded by an excellent coaching staff, Drake Maye morphing into a superstar quarterback, strong free agent and draft classes from 2025, the future looks bright no matter what happens going forward.

The AFC is wide open. The Patriots have just as good a chance as any of the teams to get to the Super Bowl. If they don't, it'll be disappointing.

But it shouldn't erase all the progress that was made. It shouldn't erase the thought of the Patriots being contenders for many years to come.

Here's some clips from the week:

MassLive sports columnist Karen Guregian makes the postseason pick:

The Patriots (14-3), the AFC's No. 2 seed, drew the LA Chargers (11-6), the No. 7 seed in this Wildcard round matchup.

The two teams met last season in Foxborough. The Chargers blew out the Patriots, 40-7.

With a new coach, a revamped coaching staff, a roster that underwent a facelift, and a quarterback that's blossomed into an MVP candidate Year 2, the Patriots are a far different team than the one that got smoked by the Chargers last season.

They've become contenders much quicker than expected. Does that mean they'll be one-and-done after facing a more experienced and more proven Chargers team? The way they played all year, the way they've bought into Mike Vrabel and his coaching staff, I think not.

The Chargers are a good team. They're well-coached by Jim Harbaugh, and have a talented quarterback in Justin Herbert. Their defense is one of the best - if not the best - the Patriots have faced this year.

But they're traveling across the country to the Northeast. They're a dome team having to play in the cold. The cases of dome teams winning playoff games outside in the dead of winter are few and far between.

So I'm going with Vrabel, Maye and the Patriots in this one.

Final score prediction: Patriots 24, Chargers 20

Patriots Question of the Week

Here is this week's highlighted question:

Do you think Mike Vrabel should be the NFL's Coach of the Year? - Fred from Braintree

Guregian: Based on the Patriots turnaround, going from a 4-win team to a 14-win team in one season, Vrabel is certainly worthy of the honor. It's just a crowded field this year. There are plenty of coaches who helped trigger turnaround seasons.

Jacksonville's Liam Coen and Chicago's Ben Johnson fall into that category, and it wouldn't be a shock if either won the award.

Seattle's Mike Macdonald, Denver's Sean Payton, San Francisco's Kyle Shanahan and Houston's DeMeco Ryans are also in the discussion.

I might be a little biased, but I think Vrabel should get it. The expected 2-or-3 year rebuild for the Patriots happened in one year.
