ICE’s horrific enforcement operations are “by design” to meet the Trump administration’s mandate on mass deportation, a former ICE official in regulatory affairs and policy told my colleague Isabela Dias.

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act made ICE the highest-funded law enforcement agency in the country. ICE is in a hiring frenzy and deploying new agents with limited training. And as Isabela writes, ICE agents are not following protocol. They don’t know community policing either. That isn’t—and shouldn’t be—their job.

Our photo director Mark Murrmann compiled photos and Amanda Moore has done excellent on-the-ground reporting of what this looks like in Minneapolis.

That’s one reason why the Trump administration continues to spin false narratives to justify the conduct of ICE officers and blame their targets: They require every bit of the violence.
