Chicago Tribune Opinion

Monday, January 26, 2026

Good morning.

Storer H. Rowley of Northwestern University did not mince words about President Donald Trump in the Sunday Opinion section, arguing that "this nation that was once such a beacon for democracy and helped build the post-World War II global order is now viewed by foes and even friends as a corrupt, unreliable and immoral rogue state."

And that is one of Rowley's milder statements.

It is a powerful dissent and an example of the school of thought that argues for no cooperation with Trump; only resistance. We welcome hearing from those who disagree.

Meanwhile, on a happier note, our architecture critic Edward Keegan wrote about what he calls a beautiful grocery store on Chicago's West Side, a supermarket with "40 Acres" in its name and a visual referent to a promise once made. I'm fascinated by retail design and here is an example of one that goes far beyond the typical cookie-cutter approach of your local Jewel or Whole Foods. It's a wonderful piece.

The editorial board Sunday looked in detail at the deal to change the Chinese ownership of TikTok, the social media site with a huge influence on our young people. We worry about whether the new boss isn't that different from the old boss. Where is the necessary transparency, we ask?

Today, we note that Interstate 55 is among the most dangerous highways in the country, despite running the course of the emotionally laden Route 66. And, in an attempt to find some solace in the national political scene, we welcome the news that the Second Lady is having a baby.

Also today: We return to the big upzoning row on Chicago's North Side, a never-ending source of controversy, it seems, for North Broadway.

And correspondent John T. Shaw looks at statesmanship. Remember that?

Have a good Monday. We're beginning our endorsement interviews.

Editorial: Trump and China make a welcome TikTok deal. There’s still plenty to worry about.

The details provided so far around TikTok’s new U.S. operation don’t tell us whether concerns prompting the 2024 federal law requiring Chinese divestiture of the platform have been addressed.
