The Trump administration has announced that the investigation into the killing of Alex Pretti will be conducted by — wait for it — Kristi Noem’s Department of Homeland Security, the exact department that oversaw the entire disastrous invasion of Minneapolis from the start. These people must really think we’re stupid. But this will not stand. The Intercept has launched our own, truly independent investigation of what happened that day, including the following initial key focuses of inquiry:
We know from past experience that forcing this administration to comply with FOIA requests can be a long and costly process, and DHS is going to extraordinary lengths to keep the names of the shooters secret and control the investigation itself. If you’ve saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately: It’s been more than four days since masked immigration officers shot and killed Alex Pretti — and we still don’t know their names. We don’t have a full picture of what federal agents were doing on the scene to begin with. We don’t know anything about their past records and what other complaints may have been filed against them. And we don’t know enough about the training they have or haven’t received in the use of deadly force. And now the Trump administration wants us to trust DHS Secretary Kristi Noem to conduct the investigation? Absolutely f*cking not. The Intercept has years of experience investigating lethal uses of force by law enforcement and blowing the lid off of government coverups. With your help, we’ll dig for the truth about the killing of Alex Pretti as well. Donate $5 now. Stop ICE and CBP.
