From the Principal’s Pen

Dear Laurel Hill Families,

We hope you are all safe and staying warm in the midst of the winter weather! The upcoming weekend will certainly determine our status for Monday. Please stay abreast of the district's alerts and notifications. Please help us share with families that may not subscribe to our newsletter that this is one of our main sources for communication to the school community. They can subscribe here.

Although students have been home for the snow days, a list of resources has been compiled for students and families in case they or someone they know needs assistance while schools are closed for winter weather. Please visit FCPS’ winter resources page for information on academic support, mental health support, and county resources related to food, clothing, housing, and other needs.

We encourage students to take advantage of fun learning opportunities during snow or inclement weather days. Consider these winter activities to blend education and play at home. Additionally, FCPS has extended the 2nd quarter to accommodate missing time due to the snow days. See the information below. You can also reach out to your child's teacher with specific questions pertaining to this extension and assignments.

Sincerely,

Janice Dalton, Principal

Addison Smith, Assistant Principal

Thmeaka Traylor, Assistant Principal

End-of-Quarter

Due to the recent loss of instructional days, the final day of the second quarter has been moved to Tuesday, February 3.

Teachers may continue second-quarter assessments through February 3 and will share any specific changes with students and families through Schoology. Students in semester courses will continue attending first-semester classes through February 3. Dr. Reid’s letter to the community about the end-of-quarter adjustments contains more details.

SIS ParentVUE will be unavailable for students and parents during end-of-quarter updates from Tuesday, February 3, at 4 p.m. until Monday, February 9, at 6 a.m. (These dates have been updated with the later end of quarter date.)

Snow Day Meal Kits: Feeding Students During Inclement Weather

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) makes sure every student has healthy meals, even when schools are closed for snowy weather. In an effort to support students who may be experiencing food insecurity, Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) is providing Snow Day Meal Kits on Wednesday, January 28 to Friday, January 30.

These kits include everything a student needs for the day. Each kit contains:

  • Two school meals
  • Two healthy snacks

The meals in these kits are the same nutritious foods served on our regular school menus.

Meal kits are available for all children under the age of 18. There is no cost for these meals. Only one kit can be given per child. Children do not need to be present to pick up the kits. No proof of eligibility or identification is required.
