WWES Friday Update 1/30/26

January 30, 2026

Dear Waynewood Owls,

Well, families, I think it’s safe to say that the "snow dance" you performed last Friday was perhaps a bit too effective! While we certainly enjoyed the magic of a winter wonderland, the "digging out" process has been quite the adventure for all of us this week. I hope your time at home was filled with extra laughter, warm cocoa, and some outdoor fun. As much as we appreciate the beauty of a quiet, snow-covered campus, we miss the special kind of energy that only our students bring to our hallways and  we are more than ready to welcome everyone back to Waynewood this coming Monday (hopefully).

Before we jump back into our routines, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our incredible custodial team. They have been working tirelessly in the freezing cold all week, clearing paths and treating ice to ensure that our grounds are safe and accessible for every student and staff member. Their dedication is the backbone of our school, and we are so grateful for the care they take in looking after us.

As you prepare for the return to school on Monday, please take a quick moment this weekend to check your "tech stations." Many of our students brought their devices home last week to stay connected, and we want to hit the ground running on Monday morning. Please ensure that both the device and the charger make it back into the backpack so that everyone is powered up and ready to learn.

Our school spirit remains unshakable, even when the weather shifts our plans. We have officially rescheduled our SCA Spirit Day to Wednesday, February 4, and it is a day that is very close to our hearts. We will be celebrating "Tough like Taylor" to honor one of our own brave students who is currently fighting cancer. We invite every student and staff member to wear pink and orange.  Pink to celebrate Taylor and orange to raise awareness for Leukemia. Seeing a sea of these colors in our hallways will be a powerful reminder of the strength and compassion of our Waynewood family.

If you’re looking for a break from cooking tonight, please head over to the Waynewood parking lot! DC Slices will be serving up fresh, hot pizza from 4:00 PM to 7:30 PM. It’s a wonderful way to see some friendly faces while supporting our school; 10% of the proceeds will go directly to our PTA.

Looking ahead to next week, we are bracing ourselves for the excitement of the Spelling Bee. The competition is always fierce and the talent is truly impressive—good luck to all of our participants! Additionally, please mark your calendars for BINGO Night on February 19. This is one of our most popular PTA events of the year and it almost always sells out. If you haven't reserved your spot yet, I encourage you to do so soon so you don't miss out on the fun.

Thank you for your continued partnership and for the warmth you bring to our school community, even on the coldest days. Enjoy the rest of your weekend, stay warm, and we will see you on Monday!

Sincerely,

Katie Cachine, Principal

Alyssa Bonner, Assistant Principal

Allison Ovalle, Assistant Principal

It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Kindergarten helps children learn and practice the social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives.

Fairfax County public schools typically conduct kindergarten registration events, including orientation, in the spring. Eligible children can be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps schools prepare and ensure they have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

If your child will attend our school, please gather necessary documents and complete registration forms as soon as possible.

FCPS offers support and resources for all families to help with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For support in other languages, please visit the FCPS Registration webpage
