Principal's Message

Greetings Tiger Families!

This week’s winter weather certainly created lots of anticipation, excitement, back pain, and scheduling adjustments for us all. Thank you all for the patience and flexibility as we navigate a safe return to school. I am so very grateful for the work done by our dedicated custodial team, who were out braving the cold and icy conditions to prepare Twain for our staff and students’ return. In collaboration with the FCPS Facilities and Maintenance team and our private contracting partners, we are making sure Twain is ready to be roaring with Tigers next week.

Please note the following details related to our schedule for next week that were adjusted due to our snow cancellations.

  • Monday, February 2nd – Even Day (periods 2, 4, 6, 8)
  • Tuesday, February 3rd – Odd Day (periods 1, 3, 5, 7) *last day of the second quarter/first semester
  • Wednesday, February 4th – Even Day (periods 4, 2, 6, 8) *first day of the third quarter/second semester, ** schedule altered due to WIDA Access Testing
  • Thursday, February 5th – Odd Day (periods 1, 3, 5, 7)
  • Friday, February 6th – Even Day (periods 4, 2, 6, 8), **schedule altered due to WIDA Access Testing

Please continue to be safe and warm this weekend and we look forward to seeing all of our students bright and early on Monday morning!

Calendar Reminder: No School for Students/Quarter End

End-of-Quarter

Due to the recent loss of instructional days, the final day of the second quarter has been moved to Tuesday, February 3.

Teachers may continue second-quarter assessments through February 3 and will share any specific changes with students and families through Schoology. Students in semester courses will continue attending first-semester classes through February 3. Dr. Reid’s letter to the community about the end-of-quarter adjustments contains more details.

SIS ParentVUE will be unavailable for students and parents during end-of-quarter updates from Tuesday, February 3, at 4 p.m. until Monday, February 9, at 6 a.m. (These dates have been updated with the later end of quarter date.)

National School Counselor Appreciation Week

National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors have in helping students achieve academic success and planning for a career.

School counselors work with students in a variety of different capacities, whether it is through classroom lessons, group sessions, or individual counseling. Learn more about the role of school counselors in FCPS.

Thank you to our Twain professional school counselors - Ms. Balderston, Ms. Clinton, Ms. Pilotti and Ms. Sowa - for the amazing work you do to support our young Tigers academic and personal growth!

Meal Kits Available for Students

In an effort to support students who may be experiencing food insecurity while our schools are closed during planned student holidays, Fairfax County Public Schools Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) is providing meal kits at specific schools for students. Meal kits will be available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, January 29, and Friday, January 30

Children do not need to be present to pick up the kits, which will contain a meal and a healthy snack. No proof of eligibility or identification is required. View pickup locations for meal kits.

Student Extra-curricular Event Eligibility – Winter Dance on February 6th

At Twain we are very proud of the many extra-curricular and social events that are offered to our students throughout the school year by the school, our student government, and our generous PTA. Next up on the calendar for our students is our SCA Winter Dance, to be held on Friday, February 6th. Tickets go on sale next week during lunches and will not be sold at the door. Please note that the privilege to attend these events is contingent on good attendance and positive behaviors at school. Please speak to your student(s) regarding their desire to attend school events and how their decisions during the school day contribute to eligibility for these positive and fun events.

Available Student Accident Insurance

Fairfax County Public Schools does not provide medical insurance for accidents that occur at school. Parents may want to consider if purchasing voluntary student insurance is right for their family.

K & K Insurance Group has student accident insurance coverage available for purchase by parents. If you do not have other insurance, this plan may be a resource to consider. Additionally, even if you have other coverage, this plan can help fill expensive gaps caused by deductibles and co-pays. Coverage may be purchased at any time during the school year.
