Notes from the Nest

From the Principals’ Desk

After a week of snow days and student holidays, we are looking forward to welcoming our students back to school. When we return, families may notice longer lines at Kiss and Ride and longer wait times at bus stops as routines resume and transportation adjusts to weather-related conditions and delays. Thank you in advance for your patience and flexibility during this transition back.As sidewalks and neighborhood paths continue to be impacted by snow and ice, we kindly ask families to shovel sidewalks as best they can so students are able to walk safely and do not need to step into the roadway. We would also like to extend a huge thank you to our custodial team, who worked tirelessly to clear walkways, entrances, and parking areas to make our school safe and accessible for students, staff, and families. Their efforts behind the scenes make a big difference for our entire community.

Snow Removal at SEES

Thank you for your continued partnership and care as we return to school together.

With appreciation,

April Martin, Proud Principal & Kassandra Flading, Assistant Principal

Laptops, iPads & Chargers!

As students prepare to return to school, we wanted to share a gentle reminder to please make sure that school-issued laptops or iPads, along with the chargers your child brought home just before the extended time out of school, are packed in their backpacks.

These devices are used daily for instruction and assessments, so it is important that they return to school with students, preferably charged and ready to use.

Thank you so much for your support and partnership. We are looking forward to welcoming students back.

Student Fasting Meal Kits

From February 18 to March 19, 2026, a Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) waiver allows students fasting during the school day to request take-home meal kits. These kits include a complete school breakfast and lunch to be eaten after the school day ends.

Important Meal Kit Information:

  • Kits are charged based on a student’s meal status (Free, Reduced, or Paid).
  • Students may claim one breakfast and one lunch kit per day.
  • Students who eat a meal at school during the day are not eligible for a take-home kit on the same day.
  • Kits are distributed at the end of the school day. Students must pick up their own kits; adults are not permitted to collect them.

Parents or guardians must submit a weekly request form via the FCPS FNS website by the deadlines:

  • February 11, 2026 for week of February 18, 2026
  • February 16, 2026 for the week of February 23, 2026

❄️ Cold Weather Safety Reminders

As we continue to experience cold, snowy, and icy conditions, we ask families to review the following safety reminders with students:

  • Stay on cleared sidewalks and pathways. These areas have been treated to help prevent slips and falls. Please remind students not to walk in the road or through snowbanks.
  • No playing on ice or snow piles on campus. Ice can be slippery and unsafe, even when it looks solid. For everyone’s safety, students should avoid sliding, climbing, or playing on icy areas at school.
  • Dress for the weather. Students should wear a warm coat, gloves, hat, and appropriate footwear so they can safely and comfortably enjoy outdoor time when conditions allow.
  • Walk carefully and take your time. Encourage students to watch where they step, use handrails when available, and avoid running on icy surfaces.
  • Listen to adult directions. Staff members are positioned to help keep students safe during arrival, dismissal, and transitions outdoors.

It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Kindergarten helps children learn and practice the social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives.

Fairfax County public schools typically conduct kindergarten registration events, including orientation, in the spring. Eligible children can be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps schools prepare and ensure they have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

If your child will attend our school, please gather necessary documents and complete registration forms as soon as possible.

FCPS offers support and resources for all families to help with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For support in other languages, please visit the FCPS Registration webpage
