WWES Friday Updates 2/6/26

Friday, February 6, 2026

Dear Waynewood Owls,

It was so great to welcome everyone back after our extended snowcrete break!

Our main event this week was the much-anticipated Waynewood Spelling Bee. It is no small feat to stand on a stage in front of peers and judges to tackle complex words under pressure. I want to offer a massive round of applause to every single student who participated. Stepping out of your comfort zone to embrace a challenge is exactly what we hope to foster in our students. You all showed incredible grit!

A special congratulations to our Junior Bee winner, Kit Barthalow, and our Senior Bee winner, Jack Stoddard. Jack will move on to represent Waynewood at the next level of competition, and we are already rooting for him. We know he will represent our school with excellence and poise. Of course, these events don’t happen by magic; they are the result of tireless dedication behind the scenes. A heartfelt thank you to our Spelling Bee chairs, Rachel DeMarco and Bonnie Keith, for their meticulous organization. We also couldn't have done it without the support of our staff, so please join me in thanking Mrs. Rawl, Ms. Nye, Mrs. Stewart, Mrs. Zaborski, Mrs. Jarboe, Mrs. Melissa Sullivan, Ms. Tara Sullivan, Ms. Benner, Ms. Lewis, and Ms. Shipley, who all volunteered their time to serve as pronouncers and judges.

Speaking of community effort, I want to share a "proud principal" moment regarding the recent weather. While our custodial team works hard on the building and school grounds, several parents stepped up to clear snow from the crosswalks and high-traffic intersections off-campus where our students walk. This kind of community spirit is what makes Waynewood such a wonderful place to lead. Thank you for keeping our walkers safe!

Looking ahead  to next week,  our SCA is having a "heartfelt" spirit day.  On Thursday, February 12, everyone is encouraged to wear hearts! We know it is a little early but Friday, February 13 is the 100th day of school and there may be other activities going on that day in various classrooms.

This evening, I hope you’ll join us for dinner in the parking lot. DC Slices will be serving up fresh pizza from 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM tonight. Not only is it a great way to skip the cooking, but 10% of the proceeds directly benefit our PTA and the programs they provide for our kids. Finally, please mark your calendars for BINGO Night on February 19. If you’ve been at Waynewood for a while, you know this event is a community favorite and almost always a sell-out. I strongly encourage you to reserve your spot now so you don't miss out on the fun.

Next week our SCA is having a "heartfelt" spirit day.  On Thursday, February 12, everyone is encouraged to wear hearts!

Thank you for your continued partnership, your warmth, and for sharing your incredible children with us every day. I hope you all have a cozy, restful weekend filled with laughter.

Sincerely,

Katie Cachine, Principal

Alyssa Bonner, Assistant Principal

Allison Ovalle, Assistant Principal

Crossing Guard Appreciation

Crossing Guard Appreciation

Thank you to our crossing guard, Mrs. Barbara Taylor!  She has been serving the Waynewood and Sandburg communities for many, many, years.  We appreciate the way she takes such good care of our Owls who walk to school. Our patrols presented her with some sweet treats to show our appreciation.
