Mustang Memo 2.6.26
Multilingual Family Night - Thursday, February 12

Message from Dr. Sheers

As the holy month of Ramadan begins, we  want to extend warm wishes to our students, families, and staff who observe this important time. West Springfield is committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all students and families. During Ramadan, our school is prepared to support students in several ways. Students who are fasting may request appropriate accommodations during the school day, including flexibility with physical activities when needed. Students may also request a quiet space for prayer, and we encourage families to communicate with teachers to let them know your child is fasting. Additionally, Meal Kits are available by request

FCPS recognizes religious observances, and absences related to Ramadan are excused in accordance with School Board policy. Families should notify the school following regular attendance procedures if a student will be absent for religious reasons.

In addition, our school counselor and teachers are available to support students socially and emotionally throughout the month. We value the richness that our diverse community brings to our school and appreciate your partnership in helping us create a respectful and welcoming environment for all students at West Springfield.

News and Notes

Ramadan - Meditation/Silent Reflection
As we prepare for Ramadan (February 17 – March 20), students who are fasting, may choose to spend their scheduled lunchtime in the library for silent reflection with permission by their parent/guardian.

Please complete this FORM if you wish for your child to access the Meditation/Silent Reflection Space during their lunch.

Student Fasting Meal Kits
From February 18 to March 19, 2026, a Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) waiver allows students fasting during the school day to request take-home meal kits. These kits include a complete school breakfast and lunch to be eaten after the school day ends.

Important Meal Kit Information:

  • Kits are charged based on a student’s meal status (Free, Reduced, or Paid).
  • Students may claim one breakfast and one lunch kit per day.
  • Students who eat a meal at school during the day are not eligible for a take-home kit on the same day.
  • Kits are distributed at the end of the school day. Students must pick up their own kits; adults are not permitted to collect them.

Parents or guardians must submit a weekly request form via the FCPS FNS website by the deadlines:

  • February 11, 2026 for week of February 18, 2026
  • February 16, 2026 for the week of February 23, 2026
  • February 23, 2026 for the week of March 2, 2026
  • March 2, 2026 for the week of March 9, 2026

March 9, 2026 for the week of March 16, 2026

Kindness Week - February 9 - 13

WSES Great Kindness Challenge – Kindness Week | February 9 - 13

We are excited to celebrate Kindness Week with our WSES Great Kindness Challenge! Students are invited to play Kindness Bingo, completing small, meaningful acts of kindness that strengthen our community and reflect our shared Mustang values. Completed bingo cards may be turned into the house boxes outside the main office, and students who participate will earn a point for their house (Resilio, Innovara, Synerix, and Ethica). Our goal is to enjoy a little friendly competition while celebrating the belief that when we all focus on kindness, together we RISE.

To help inspire kindness across our building, classes will take part in kindness-themed classroom door decorating, and students can create “Mustang Proud / I Love WSES Because…” hearts for display in the front entrance.  Students are also invited to join in kindness-themed spirit days throughout the week:

  • Monday (2/9): “Work Out” Problems with Kindness – wear workout gear or a sweatshirt
  • Tuesday (2/10): Color Our World with Kindness – wear your favorite color
  • Wednesday (2/11): Warm Fuzzy Wednesday – wear something comfy and cozy
  • Thursday (2/12): Team Up for Kindness - wear spirit wear or school colors
  • Friday (2/13): 100 Years of Style - celebrate the 100th day of school and step back in time. Pick a decade to celebrate!

During these cold winter days, we hope Kindness Week brings a little extra light and warmth. We are Mustang Proud of our caring school community and look forward to celebrating kindness together.
