Principal’s Message to Families
Dear Ravensworth Families,
It was so wonderful to have all our students and staff back in the building this week after the closures from Snow & Ice storm “Fern”. Our Ravensworth community was excited to reconnect and share snow stories while quickly settling back into routines and instruction.
This week was National School Counselor’s Week, and we are so lucky to have two dedicated counselors at Ravensworth. They are Alicia Schwenk and Todd Austin. The Social Emotional instruction and supports our counselors provide for our students is expansive. Some of their work include providing lessons for grade level classes, leading skill-based groups, mentoring, providing emotional support, and acting as case managers for our students with 504 Plans. If you see Mr. Austin or Mrs. Schwenk, please don’t hesitate to introduce yourself and connect with these two amazing staff members.
Our G2G/Steam teachers provided a hands-on ecosystem simulation lesson, Enviroscapes, lesson for our students. This was a learning experience our students will remember while building science, technology, and ecological awareness. Thank you, Ms. Blend and Mrs. Fortenberry!
Next week is officially “Kindness Week” in FCPS and at Ravensworth. This initiative highlights the impact of everyday acts of kindness in creating compassionate, safe, healthy, and welcoming schools and communities. Please ask your child about our Kindness Week lessons and activities.
Thank you for your partnership,
Shannon Mueck
Principal
SCA Patrol of the Month - Congratulations to Cathleen Braudis
Congratulations to our February Patrol of the Month, 6th grader, Cathleen Braudis. She is responsible and acts like a patrol even when she’s not on duty. She makes sure students are safe and gives 100% in her classes. It seems like she is always doing the right thing. Awesome work, Cathleen! |

Ravensworth ES New Arrival and Dismissal Traffic Flow
Thank you to all our parents, caregivers, siblings, students and staff for your willingness to support the changes to our arrival and dismissal traffic flow. These changes have been made to ensure all our students, staff, and families are safe during these very busy times of the day.
These changes include:
- One way school traffic pattern on Nutting Dr. with the Kiss and Ride entrance starting from
- No student drop offs nor pick-ups on Nutting Dr.
- Crossing of Nutting Dr. is allowed only in the cross walks
Our data shows that the new traffic flow decreased the illegal/dangerous 69 incidents measured the week before the snow closure to 3 incidents measured this week. Our goal is to have 0 incidents and with your help we know this is achievable.

Adding Spanish Dual Language Immersion to Kindergarten for School Year 2026-27 & RES will continue with our Spanish Dual Language Immersion Lottery for First Grade as well! |
|
 |
School Year 2026-2027 Dual Language Immersion (DLI) Program Information:
All rising kindergarten and first grade students who live in Fairfax County may enter a lottery to participate in Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs. In DLI programs, students are learning elementary content in two languages with students spending half of the day learning in either language. English Language Arts and Social Studies are taught in English. Math, Science, Health, and Target Language Arts are taught in another language. FCPS offers DLI programs in French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish. Online lottery application begins on January 12 (8:30 a.m.). A SIS account is required to complete the application. If a student is not currently enrolled in FCPS, registration at the base school is required. FCPS does not provide transportation for students who live outside the attendance area of the DLI school. A one-time fee of $100 must be paid upon acceptance of an out-of-boundary placement (see Notice 5922).

Emergency Response Buttons: Enhancing Safety and Security for Staff and Students
School safety and security are being enhanced across FCPS with a new emergency management system. The system includes sensors installed in schools and a wearable emergency response button (ERB) for staff.
The button allows staff to quickly and discreetly request help and, once pressed, they provide location information within the school. The ERB will only work on school grounds and does not rely on cellular service. It is not meant to replace calling 911 but is an additional safety tool that can be used if calling 911 may not be safe or practical.
Learn more about the emergency management system. You may submit questions to the FCPS Chief of Safety and Security Office.
Ravensworth Chess Club – Spring Registration is Open!
Registration for the spring semester of the Ravensworth Chess Club is now open! Families can register online at https://chessctr.org/ravensworth/. The cost is $130 for the semester and includes a Chess Club T-shirt and snacks at each meeting. |
|
 |
The club is open to students in grades 2–6 who want to learn how to play chess or improve their skills. Meetings are held on Tuesdays from February 3–June 2, 2026, from 3:30–5:00 PM in the school cafeteria. Chess Club will not meet on days when school is closed or there is an early release.
New registrations will be accepted through February 24; after this date, registration will close. New spring students may withdraw and receive a full refund up to that date. After February 24, refunds will be prorated and subject to transaction fees.
Student Experience Survey
Our school will participate in the FCPS Student Experience Survey. This survey will gather important feedback from students about their school experiences to help FCPS make meaningful improvements.
All students in grades 3-6, except those who have opted out, will receive a link to the survey in their FCPS email on February 23. We will administer the survey during the school day between Monday, February 23, and Friday, March 6. Any student may take the survey at home, if they are unable to take the survey during the school day. You will receive a communication with details on how to preview the survey and opt your child out, if you choose. The electronic opt-out form can also be accessed at this link.
We believe it's important to hear from our students about what we're doing well and where we can improve. This work also aligns with the equity commitments in FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan, which include a focus on amplifying student voice and experiences as we work toward meeting plan goals.
Family Spotlight Board
If your child has had a great personal/family moment lately, send Ms. Heiman (amheiman@fcps.edu) a photo and it will be displayed on the Family Spotlight bulletin board in the main hallway! Examples: family celebrated a holiday, cultural traditions, child rode their bike without training wheels, great soccer game, got a new pet, and more!
