February 6-8, Irving Middle School presents the Virginia premiere of Between the Lines Jr., a family friendly version of the musical based on the book by Jodi Picoult and Samantha van Leer. Between the Lines Jr. is an empowering and enchanting musical for anyone who has struggled to find their place in the world. An outsider in a new town and a new school, Delilah seeks comfort in the pages of her favorite book, where she feels heard and understood by the handsome Prince Oliver. But as the lines between fantasy and reality begin to blur in extraordinary ways, Delilah realizes her dreams in the real world are worth fighting for. |
Dear Irving Middle School Community,
Welcome back! We hope you and your families stayed safe and warm during our recent snow days. We are excited to return to school and get back into our routines.
This week marks the beginning of the second semester and the start of the third quarter. It is a fresh opportunity for students to set goals, reflect on their progress, and continue growing academically and socially. We appreciate your ongoing partnership as we support our students during this new phase of the school year.
I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our custodial staff for their tremendous efforts in clearing snow and ice and ensuring that our building was safe and ready for students and staff to return. We are also very grateful to our bus drivers, who skillfully navigated challenging winter conditions to transport our students safely to and from school.
Finally, congratulations to our theater students and their advisors on a wonderful premier performance of Between the Lines, Jr. Their hard work, talent, and dedication truly shined, and we are so proud of all involved.
Thank you for your continued support of our school community. We look forward to a strong and successful start to the semester.
Warm regards,
Kathleen Quigley

Academic Advising Updates
Rising 9th Grade WSHS Academic Advising:
On Friday February 6, 2026 all 8th grader students entered their course selections for 9th grade WSHS into SIS during 1st period Advisory. You may view their selections on the SIS Parent Vue website under the Course Requests tab. Additional information:
- Please note that core courses previously listed in SIS for your child are their teacher suggestions. If students wanted to request a different core class than what was listed, they were asked to add the preferred course change that they want into SIS (example: students might have two (2) Science classes listed as they are not able to delete the teacher suggestions- school counselors will delete any unwanted courses with your child during one-on-one academic advising as needed during the next few weeks).
- Students also entered their electives of choice (some of the WSHS elective codes were not yet working (example: Yoga)- we asked students to simply hold off for now. They will be able to add their course choices when we they meet with their counselor for academic advising. Your child and their school counselor will add and change any courses together as needed.
- If your child is interested in taking a course over the summer, we asked that they email their assigned school counselor so that they can provide information and links for registration.
- Next Steps: Your child’s assigned school counselor will meet with your child for one-on-one academic advising sometime this month via their English classes to complete academic advising.
For additional questions about this process, please reach out to your child’s counselor:
- Silver and Teal Teams—Dave Frenck djfrenck@fcps.edu
- Red and Purple Teams—Cynthia Pareja cspareja@fcps.edu

-
8 Elective Choices, ranked in preference order, 1-8 (Please consider that the top choices should fill 2 periods with 2 year-long, 1 year-long and 1 semester or 4 semester classes.)
-
Students should return their course selection sheets to their advisory teacher as soon as possible, but NO LATER THAN Tuesday, February 18, 2026.

If you would like your child to have access to the Meditation and Silent Reflection Space during instructional time, please review the Policies and Procedure (linked) and complete the google form linked on the sight to provide parent permission.
Student Fasting Meal Kits
From February 18 to March 19, 2026, a Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) waiver allows students fasting during the school day to request take-home meal kits. These kits include a complete school breakfast and lunch to be eaten after the school day ends.
Important Meal Kit Information:
-
Students who eat a meal at school during the day are not eligible for a take-home kit on the same day.
-
Kits are distributed at the end of the school day. Students must pick up their own kits; adults are not permitted to collect them.
Parents or guardians must submit a weekly request form via the FCPS FNS website by the deadlines:
Forms must be submitted on time to receive meal kits for the following week.

Library News:
It was a quieter week than normal in the library this week, with the two-hour delays creating a different schedule for us. We’ve been busy preparing for 7th grade English class visits next week. All students will be borrowing a narrative nonfiction title for a third quarter book project. What is narrative nonfiction? It’s a true story (the non-fiction part) that is written in a way that reads like a novel, a story with a beginning, middle and end! I look forward to helping your student find a book that they’ll enjoy.
