Good morning. Today we’re debuting some brand-new guides for the perfect lip combo:
Inside me there are two beauty editors. One is a deeply practical minimalist who needs no-frills skin care and a shampoo that really works. The other is a lipstick-collecting romantic obsessed with the lore: I’m a sucker for shade names like Ruby Woo and Toast of NY. Nowhere is my dual nature more on display than in my current lip routine, which features two very different, but equally perfect products. First, there’s my new favorite balm, Dr. Dan’s Cortibalm. It’s not much to look at, but this little tube holds the only lip balm I’ve tried that actually heals flakes and dryness instead of hiding them behind a waxy sheen. I’ve been applying it before and after weekend hikes, and, for the first winter in years, I haven’t ended up with painfully chapped lips. READ THE GUIDE And then there’s this ridiculously indulgent lipstick, Guerlain Rouge G, sold separately from its equally indulgent, refillable case. The velvety formula makes me want to use verbs like hug and float, because there’s no other way to describe how the pigment glides on and sits just so, somehow never settling into lines. My favorite shade, Le Rouge Rubis, is a saturated red as red as International Klein blue is blue. I’ve been swiping it on before important work meetings for an instant confidence boost. READ THE GUIDE Of course, to each their own. If you want to find your own stalwarts, please join me in the rabbit hole I recently went down with Wirecutter’s other beauty experts. Over the past three months, we enlisted 43 diverse panelists ages 16 to 76 to evaluate products for every lip need: from glosses and oils that promise high shine, to the very best pencils to color, define, and contour. We independently review everything we recommend. When you buy through our links, we may earn a commission. Learn more ›
Like an artist’s colored pencils, lip liners provide precision, pigment, and creative possibility: You can define lip edges, color outside the lines for the illusion of fullness, sketch a bit to subtly contour, or fill in your lips as a primer for lipstick, gloss, or balm. To fulfill all of these duties, the best liners must glide on smoothly and deliver even color that won’t disappear with your morning coffee. Our 3 favorites after testing 18→
After considering 50 lip glosses, we found five standouts — including a juicy, nourishing balm and a deliciously thick gloss — that deliver a high-shine, long-lasting finish. Muah.
