Cubbie News
Dear Cub Run Families and Friends,
As we reflect on the past couple of days, we are overwhelmed by the heart of our school. We often talk about "community," but this week, you lived it.
First and foremost, we are so thankful that all our Cubbies and families are safe. We want to extend a sincere thank you for the incredible outpouring of support for our families who have been displaced due to the recent evacuations. Seeing our community rally together—offering resources, kind words, and a helping hand—has been deeply moving.
We are honored to serve such a resilient and compassionate community. We hope to see many of you at Bingo Night this Friday!
Warm regards,
Melissa Miller, Principal
Nausheen Haider, Assistant Principal

Benchmark Unit 5: Exploring Technology and Society in Language Arts
Benchmark Unit 5 in Language Arts is about technology and how it can help us solve problems at home, school, and work. Students in K-5 will be learning about technology and society. Grade six students will learn about technology in the 21st century.
Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:
- Question: If you could invent anything, what would it be?
- Activity: Talk to your child about what daily life was like before today’s advances in technology. Where would you go to find information? How did you stay in touch with friends and family? Ask your child if they think they would like living without modern technology.
At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website.
Library Access for Students Fasting in Ramadan

Meal Kits for Fasting Students
From February 18 to March 19, students who are fasting during the day can take school meals home. These kits include one breakfast and one lunch to be eaten after the school day ends.
Families must fill out a request form each week for every student who wants a kit. The first deadline is Wednesday, February 11, for the week of February 16. Please note other important details below:
-
Cost: Meals are charged just like a normal school day.
-
Pickup: Students must grab their kits at the end of the school day.
-
Menu: Kits include school meals that are easy to heat at home.

New Visitor Management System
We are excited to announce that our school is now using the new Raptor Visitor Management System (VMS). This upgrade is part of our school’s and FCPS’ ongoing commitment to enhancing school safety and streamlining the process for visitors at our school. The VMS ensures that no visitor is on the sex offender registry.
For most visitors, the user experience will be the same when you check-in at the front office.
But now there is also an app, which can make check-in’s even faster at school. Visitors who choose to download the RaptorSafe App and create a Raptor Passport can pre-verify their information before they get to school. The app will give you a QR code you can use when you check-in at school.
If you have questions or need assistance with the new system, please contact our front office. Thank you for your partnership in keeping our schools safe!
STEAM Supplies Needed
Our STEAM class is in need of the following supplies. If you are able to donate, please send them in to the main office. Thank you!
Empty plastic water bottles
Empty 2 liter bottles
Paper towel and toilet paper rolls
Cardboard egg cartons
Other lightweight cardboard
Volleyball Game vs. Virginia Run - March 6
Come cheer on our sixth grade students and staff during our annual volleyball game as we take on Virginia Run! The game is on Friday, March 6 from 7:00pm-9:00pm at Westfield High School in their gym.
Children must be accompanied by an adult. No child should be dropped off and left unsupervised.
Let’s put on our spirit wear and cheer on our Cubbies!
Positivity Project
This week, our school is focusing on the character strength of Kindness. Kindness means being generous to others, never being too busy to help out, and you enjoy doing good deeds for other people.
Kindness is based on the belief that everyone deserves care, attention, and compassion. Kind people think about others' needs and feelings and take action to help. They are selfless, helping others because it's the right thing to do, not for any personal gain.
People who are kind have a strong sense of duty to care for others. Their acts of kindness inspire more kindness in return.
To practice and encourage the character strength of kindness at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.
Thank you for your support!
