The U.S. Supreme Court has struck down a key pillar of Donald Trump’s protectionist trade agenda, ruling that the President acted illegally in using one of his emergency economic powers to impose sweeping tariffs on trade partners last year.

The decision, released Friday, is a major rebuke of the President on a signature economic policy. However, it’s only a partial – and likely temporary – setback for the administration.

Trade experts expect Mr. Trump to rapidly rebuild his tariff wall using other legal tools. And the sectoral tariffs on steel, aluminum, automobiles and lumber, which are hitting Canadian trade the hardest, aren’t affected by the decision and will remain in place.
