Everyone agrees that Franklin Arias is a very good prospect. But there isn’t a clear consensus on exactly how good.
Five prominent prospect publications placed him among their top 50 prospects. The range was unusually wide, with Keith Law of The Athletic placing him at No. 12, FanGraphs putting him at 14, Baseball Prospectus tabbing him at No. 25, MLB Pipeline identifying him at 31, and Baseball America pegging the 20-year-old as the No. 49 prospect in the game.
At a minimum, Arias, who the Sox plan to summon from minor league camp with some regularity in the coming days so that their big league staff can work with him, stands out as the unquestioned top positional prospect in the Sox system.
But with limited power to date, he’s a solid prospect rather than elite. At 5-foot-11-inches, he lacks the explosiveness of players who typically number among the best prospects in the sport. Arias is aware of that limitation and working purposefully to address it.
