Nearly everything that flows from the Trump White House is invariably bad. Many moments are downright heart-wrenching. But for a brief moment today, we the public bore witness to chaos that brought pure satisfaction.

Yep, I’m talking about the firing of Kristi Noem.

Now, trust me, I know that whatever comes next at the Department of Homeland Security—Sen. Markwayne Mullin, if the president gets his way—will be as abhorrent in policy as everything we’ve witnessed over the past year. But watching Noem deliver a keynote address shortly after President Donald Trump’s announcement, really giving the impression that she may not have been aware of the news of her firing today, was the stuff of unadulterated joy. It’s vintage Trump 1.0, when the HR idiocy of the first administration dominated headlines. It’s Veep-level incompetency. It’s exactly the kind of departure Noem deserves.

Anyway, we’ll be sure to cover the fallout and Mullin’s nomination. But for now, I’ve got to wonder: Was having the face for the job worth it? Noem may be out at DHS, but the brutal aesthetics are forever.
