Greetings! While many in Hollywood remain fearful of the impact of artificial intelligence, one star has embraced the technology, potentially finding a path to incorporating it in a way that won't freak everyone out. And it's gotten the attention of streaming giant Netflix. Ben Affleck founded InterPositive in 2022 after seeing the rise of AI — and how it fell short. “I had some experience and relationships with people in the precursor to AI visual effects community to go and see some early versions of what was being done with generative AI video and it really scared me,” Affleck said in a video interview shared by Netflix. “But what I learned pretty quickly was that that was a little bit of an illusion. It would often fall apart.” Affleck said he built InterPositive based on the idea of filling those gaps. On Thursday, Netflix said it was acquiring the company for an undisclosed sum, with Affleck to serve as an advisor. This was not the acquisition people were expecting from Netflix. Unlike larger AI models from the likes of OpenAI or Google, InterPositive trained its model on proprietary footage so that it learns specific filmmaking techniques and camerawork. Other filmmakers looking to take advantage can feed it dailies from a specific film and show, creating a smaller model optimized for that specific project. That model then supplies AI tools that could help with missing shots, reframing existing shots, correcting lighting or replacing backgrounds. “It’s not text to video prompts, but rather tools that fit into real production workflows and respect the artistic intent that’s behind the story,” Netflix chief technology and product officer Elizabeth Stone told TheWrap. By training the model on that early proprietary footage, and then letting filmmakers create their own "mini" model optimized for their specific projects, Interpositive gets around the sticky debate about the use of other copy-protected material, and provides an ethical way to use AI. For Affleck, this also represents another sign of the strengthening ties between the actor and Netflix. Earlier this week, Netflix signed a first look deal with Affleck and Matt Damon's Artists Equity studio. In January, Affleck and Damon's film "The Rip" came out to a strong start on Netflix.
