He’s also becoming more comfortable making political endorsements than he was in the first seven years on the job.
Here are a few places where Neronha has already put his thumb on the scale:
📌 Governor: Neronha endorsedHelena Foulkes on Thursday. The move wasn’t a surprise to close watchers of Rhode Island politics, but it may still be the most meaningful individual endorsement in the race this side of Jack Reed.
📌 Attorney general: Neronha is backing Keith Hoffmann to succeed him. Hoffmann previously worked for Neronha, but the endorsement has opened doors for the political newcomer in a competitive primary that includes Kim Ahern and state Representatives Jason Knight and Joe Solomon Jr.
📌 Lieutenant governor: Neronha hasn’t formally endorsed a candidate, but he wrote a $2,000 check to Newport Councilman Xay Khamsyvoravong last November. Khamsyvoravong formally launched his campaign to challenge incumbent Sabina Matos this week.
Foulkes, Hoffmann, and Khamsyvoravong are three of the four politicians Neronha gave $2,000 max-out donations to last year. The other was House Speaker Joe Shekarchi, whom Neronha said Thursday he supports for a spot on the Rhode Island Supreme Court. (For what it’s worth, Foulkes said she would support Shekarchi’s nomination, too.)
