Advance Reader Copies (ARCs) are how publishers approach corporate book sellers and tastemakers. The dirty secret is that the very limited number of ARCs cost oodles more to publish than the actual book itself. Limited number = higher cost per. If you ever find yourself with an ARC, treat it with respect and it will be worth so much more than a first edition.
