Good afternoon. It's Monday, March 9.

In today's newsletter:

  • Inconsistencies in how state and city crews clear snow from Anchorage sidewalks have frustrated many residents, as pedestrians sometimes find that the path of least resistance is to walk in the street.

  • The 54th Iditarod is officially underway after mushers departed from Willow Lake on Sunday afternoon, embarking on their 975-mile journey to Nome.

  • Billionaire John Paulson, who invested heavily in the huge Donlin gold project, sold his stake in Trilogy Metals around the time Trump officials announced a direct government investment in the company with Ambler Road prospects.

For many years, the lowest fare airline ticket — basic economy — has been a boon for budget travelers willing to trade comforts for a cheaper price. But major airlines have been increasingly pecking away at the category's perks. The most recent target? Frequent-flier miles. Which begs the question: Why do airlines hate basic economy passengers?

Anchorage weather

It's mostly sunny today with a high around 14 degrees. Looking ahead, we should enjoy sunny or mostly sunny skies all week, but it'll be cold. Daytime highs will range from the low to high teens through the end of the week.

Here's what else is making headlines in Alaska today.

As the defending champion, musher Jessie Holmes has the "favorite status" in this year's field. But competition will be stiff among the top pool of racers, which includes several perennial top finishers. A winner is expected next week.
