Good afternoon. It's Tuesday, March 10.

In today's newsletter:

  • Two Anchorage School Board seats are open in the April 7 election. The five candidates running to fill those seats differ greatly in experience and in their visions for the school district.

  • The state's proposed 211-mile Ambler Road to a mineral district in Northwest Alaska will cost more than $2 billion, according to a new report commissioned by a conservation group.

  • The costs associated with running the Iditarod, both as a musher and from an organizational standpoint, continue to rise. The organization is seeking new revenue streams to stay solvent and make the race viable for a new generation.

Long after his run to glory, the sled dog Balto lives on in the study of dog genetics. The remains of the dog that pulled his way into history have given scientists new insight into what makes Alaska sled dogs and other working breeds unique, says science writer Ned Rozell in his latest column.
