Happy St. Patrick's Day.
President Trump met with Ireland’s Taoiseach Micheál Martin in the Oval Office, where POTUS, once again, whined that European allies aren't down to join his war in Iran. The complaint appears to be the theme of this week. Trump aired it today in a festive green tie.
Meanwhile, Senate Republicans are cruising ahead with the so-called SAVE America Act. I know we talk a lot about national emergencies these days, and that it can be difficult to keep track of our cascading nightmares. But this legislation, which, as our national voting rights correspondent Ari Berman wrote, amounts to a "show your papers" bill, really deserves your attention.
The centerpiece of the bill remains a requirement that voters show proof of US citizenship, such as a passport or birth certificate, to register to vote. Nine percent of American citizens, roughly 21 million people, don’t have ready access to citizenship documents, according to a study by the Brennan Center and other voting rights groups.
"This would undoubtedly sow massive chaos in our elections," says Gréta Bedekovics, director of democracy at the Center for American Progress. "It would radically alter the way all Americans cast their ballots as elections are already underway. It would completely upend the 2026 election cycle."
Massive chaos upon massive chaos. That's sure what it feels like these days. Anyway, happy splitting the G day to you all.
