What does it mean to be an American? There’s no single answer. At NPR, we think of American identity as a story, one that’s constantly being rewritten by the people who live it.
The American Storytelling collection brings together stories from local stations across the NPR Network, from small-town struggles to natural wonders to the layered histories that shape our nation. These are some of our biggest little-known shows, all in one place.

Thanks for tuning in last week to the Code Switch episode about the movie Sinners, the most nominated film in the history of the Oscars. The podcast discussed what Sinners could mean for the future of Black filmmaking. Multiple NPR listeners weighed in on Black movies they feel should have moved the needle in Hollywood production. “The Help was a wonderful, moving movie. I don’t usually react to movies much, but that one was truly different,” Stephanie Pryor said. Antonio Cuyler listed Moonlight, Get Out, Black Panther and Hidden Figures as films that should have changed the way movies are greenlit.
Today, we’re listening to an It's Been a Minute. On this episode, host Brittany Luse discusses how young women are in crisis, much like young men, but it doesn’t seem like people are talking about it. Over the past two years, statistics about men's mental health, education and finances have made headlines and rung the alarm about men being in crisis. But data reveals young women struggle at the same rates in most categories. This episode takes a look at broader data across genders to paint a more accurate picture and understand why when one gender suffers, all genders do. Listen to the episode, or read the transcript. |

It's time for the Sunday Puzzle! In this week's on-air challenge, every answer is a three-syllable word, name, or phrase in which every syllable starts with B. For example, if puzzle master Will Shortz provides you with the clue “Possible result of an infested mattress,” the answer would be Bedbug bite. Test your skills here. Check the page later to hear the answers, or catch them live on Weekend Edition at 8:41 a.m. ET.
This week's online challenge comes from Joseph Young, of St. Cloud, Minn. Name an animal. The first five letters of its name spell a place where you may find it. The last four letters of this animal will name another animal, but one that would ordinarily not be found in this place. What animals are these? Submit your answer here, and you could win a chance to play next Sunday's on-air puzzle. |
