This report, prepared by Law Library of Congress staff, surveys legislation and regulations governing nuclear safety and radioactive materials in the following jurisdictions: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, England, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Pakistan, the Russian Federation, and Sweden. Among these countries, Australia does not currently use nuclear power for electricity generation and does not possess nuclear weapons; France generates more nuclear energy per capita than any other country in the world; and Germany enacted the Phase-Out Act to completely transition away from nuclear energy and has shut down all of its nuclear power plants. The jurisdictions surveyed regulate nuclear safety and radioactive material through numerous official sources, including statutes, regulations, guidelines, and other instruments.
